Easter Holidays

April 15, 2012 By Pixie Lolly

Well we survived the birthday party! It was lovely being around our friends and finally showing Kyan off! He was as good as gold and we all had a great time.

So….Easter. The last time we had a big holiday, Kyan didn’t stop refluxing! This time however, it has been much nicer. We are actually starting to live a pretty normal life now. There are still hints of reflux, but he has it under control and we have not had any severe attacks for a month or so.

All dressed for the party!

I have been off for two weeks over Easter and it has been lovely. Kyan is in a nice little routine and everything is going well. A typical day consists of Kyan waking up at about 6:30am, (me getting up with him) – he has a morning bottle as I have a mocha and we watch Peppa Pig and whatever else is on. He has a sleep at about 8am, and then wakes for his porridge about 30-45mins later. He does not stop chatting in the morning!! Poor Lauren tries to have a lay in (I’m trying to give her a break whilst I’m home) but all she can hear is our noisy lil man telling me about anything and everything…..I wish I knew what he was saying….and I wish she could have a proper lay in!

Ready for the day out and about...

After porridge he usually wants to play, then feeds, burps, plays, sleeps, feeds, burps, plays, sleeps etc. In between he is still having his reflux meds and he is having puree for lunch followed by a pot of fruit which he is really enjoying. We still haven’t found anything he doesn’t like. I guess that’s a good sign! He is showing signs of teething, so some days he isn’t eating as much as others, but we aren’t worried as Kyan loves his food! We have found those net feeding things very helpful with teething! We have been putting frozen fruit inside them and he loves sucking the fruit through.

The week before Easter weekend, we decided to start looking at nurseries for Kyan. We still aren’t certain about what we are doing but Lauren has to go back to work in September and at some point or another he will need to go to nursery. We are hoping it will only be one or two days a week but we will see what suits him.

Rolling over!

We checked out three nurseries, and we liked all three! Kyan seemed to love all of them too. He was all smiles and showing off to everyone who said ‘hi’ to him. We think we are going with the one closest to us as it was outstanding and they have two children there at the moment with Downs Syndrome, so we know there are things already in place. They are also teaching the whole nursery makaton which is definitely a plus. It
scares us that someone else will be looking after Kyan, especially with all we have been through, but the staff were lovely so hopefully he will be alright! We are hoping to start him in August…

A few days before Easter, Kyan made us very proud mummies! He rolled over!!! All on his own!!! He has been very close for a week or so now but he finally did it the other night. It was a very nice and controlled turn! We can’t wait for our next physio appointment – she will be very impressed! When he does it now, he rocks to build up momentum if he doesn’t get over in the first go. Such a clever little boy…

Kyan with his Easter eggs (and ours!)

We didn’t do anything huge for Easter this year. The Easter bunny visited and Kyan got a couple of eggs (which we will have to eat for him!!), and a blue bunny (sent all the way from Oz from Nannie). We spent the day at Lauren’s sisters house with all of her partner’s family from London. It was the first big family thing we had taken Kyan too and we were a little nervous. He was fine though and charmed everyone there! It was really nice being able to relax and enjoy the day. We were the last ones to leave!! Things are definitely getting better!

Last Friday we took Kyan swimming for the first time. We are lucky to have two hydrotherapy pools in our town and we are able to access them (do to Kyan’s special needs). We registered him at one and were a little disappointed that he can only have one ‘carer’ in the pool but realise that they don’t want hundreds of people in there. However, when we went, it happened to be a quiet day so they let both Lauren and I in with him. We were thrilled as this was his first time in a pool and we both wanted to share it. Kyan loved it! He was kicking his arms and legs around and tried
chasing after the floating toys. The pool was lovely and warm and had lots of water features, toys and floats to play with. Unfortunately I won’t be able to go with him until school holidays again as they are only open Mon-Fri, but Lauren is keen to take him. I wish we could both be off with him! I feel like I’m missing out on so much…

Trying out his hat from Nannie and Grandy

So, things are much better these days. Kyan is rolling over and back – his muscles are getting stronger everyday! He is pulling himself up to a sitting position (when sitting on us – he still is far from sitting on his own!) and loves standing and kicking his legs (supported by us!). Kyan is eating everything we give him, as well as taking his bottles and meds (without any complaints!) and he is still sleeping through the night (hopefully that continues!).  We are actually feeling like a ‘normal’ family now and not the family with the ‘reflux baby’. Hopefully he continues to grow stronger and the reflux leaves him for good…
