On again – off again. That’s how our summer has been this year. We are getting pretty tired of the inconsistent weather. We had one lovely week of sun and it was great having Kyan out in his nappy and letting him play in his paddling pool. He loves the water!
Kyan is almost one. I can’t believe it! He has 3 teeth and is an eating machine. However he has become quite picky with jar food and won’t have anything hot for lunch, and wants to eat what we are having for dinner. Which is fine. Except on those days when you can’t be bothered cooking and just want something frozen to throw in the oven… He is doing great though and we are pleased with his eating habits. He has gone off food when his teething but he always has a bottle so he is still growing well. He attempts to feed himself, so meal times are getting verymessy…
We had an OT (Occupational Therapy) appointment last week. We asked our physio to refer us as a few months ago as Kyan wasn’t bringing any food to his mouth and we were a little concerned. By the time the appointment came around, he was putting everything in his mouth! She assessed him anyway and was really pleased with his fine motor skills and things. He is doing great for his age so we are pleased with that.
He is now sitting on his own for longer periods of time. He sometimes falls backwards or dives for toys but other than that he is getting very stable! As for crawling…..no way. He is not interested in laying down. Just changing his nappy has become a battle! Standing is his thing. Yep, those legs are strong and he likes using them. He has low muscle tone in his arms and upper body so he can’t hold his body up to crawl, but hold his hands and he can stand for ages! He has even started lifting his right foot and moving it forward. So although we are still encouraging crawling, we also have to let him stand and try walking!
As for communication….Kyan has started signing!! He rarely uses the signs to communicate at the right time (the first day he signed ‘food’ he was doing it every five minutes!) but he can sign ‘milk’ and ‘food’ and when I signed ‘more’ to him at dinner last night, he replied with his own version! Such a clever little boy! He does sign ‘milk’ though when he wants a bottle so we are getting there. Other than the few signs he is doing, Kyan has started grunting and shouting. Our poor niece was grunted and shouted at for 3 days when she stayed last week! He loves being involved in the conversation and he thinks he is talking!
It’s been great having so much time with Lauren and Kyan. Being a teacher, I have the luxury of spending 6 weeks with the two of them and it’s been great so far. We have taken two trips to the farm, which Kyan really enjoyed, and have spent time catching up with family and friends. Lauren and I have also been able to take it in turns getting up at 6am so both of us are feeling well rested. And of course there has been the small event of the Olympics happening! We have been glued to the TV the last couple of weeks and enjoying every moment.
We received some good news this week – Kyan is now officially AUSTRALIAN!! He has duel nationality! So now I’m not the only Aussie in the house…
